As a leading home warranty provider, we strive to keep our customers informed about crucial developments that could affect their home systems. The AC manufacturer industry is currently undergoing a complete overhaul of specific refrigerant types due to environmental concerns. The American Innovation and Manufacturing Act (AIM) has given the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) authority to regulate the type of freon used in the manufacturing process of HVAC units across the country.
AIM Act mandates a phasedown of all extreme weather-warming freons which includes R410A, the most widely used freon for most HVAC manufacturers. This act has progressively been in effect since 2020, when the freon used in the systems at the time, shifted to a new type that was more environmentally forgiving.

R410A refrigerant is part of a group of synthetic gasses primarily used for cooling and refrigeration, better known as HFCs or Hydrofluorocarbons. It became popular as a replacement for its predecessor, R22, which was phased out at the end of 2010 for the same global warming-inducing reasons.
R410A is known for its efficiency and its lower environmental impact compared to previously used refrigerants, but it still has a high global warming potential (GWP) of 2088, which means it contributes to global warming 2088 times more than carbon dioxide.
The shortage of R410A refrigerant is having profound effects on homeowners and the HVAC industry alike. With supply constraints driving up prices, repairs and maintenance for existing HVAC systems have become significantly more expensive. Homeowners are facing longer wait times for service calls as acquiring R410A has become more challenging.
The transition towards environmentally friendly alternatives like R32 and R454B, which are still not available until September 2024, poses additional complexities and costs. Many homeowners may find themselves needing to replace or retrofit their systems to comply with the shift towards more sustainable refrigerants, adding further financial strain.
The recent reductions mandated by the AIM Act have had a substantial impact on the US HVAC industry’s use of R410A refrigerant. Production has been cut by at least 30% in 2024, with a phase-out planned until complete discontinuation by 2036.
This shift has prompted HVAC manufacturers to swiftly transition towards newer, more environmentally friendly refrigerants and A2L units. While production and installation of R410A units will continue through 2025, longer wait times for service calls are expected due to the dwindling availability of R410A.
Despite these changes, repair of existing R410A systems will remain feasible until the complete phase-out in 2036, ensuring ongoing support for homeowners and businesses reliant on these units.
